No. 1628 was very much a Welsh ‘16XX’, being based initially at Whitland in Carmarthenshire, before moving to Llanelly shed in July 1953. Another transfer saw No. 1628 transfer to Oswestry in July 1959 for a short stay, before Croes Newydd shed, near Wrexham, became its final home from October of the same year. Only a works visit to Wolverhampton in August 1962 interrupted its Welsh residency.\u003c\/p\u003e  \u003cp\u003eThis ‘16XX’ eventually became the last of its type in British Railways service, being withdrawn in September 1966.
