MODEL OF THE MONTH

The ‘16XX’ class of 0-6-0 pannier tank locomotives were designed for the Great Western Railway by Frederick Hawksworth, answering a need for compact, lightweight locomotives to operate a range of branch line passenger and freight duties, as well as shunting work at yards and depots.

However, construction of the 70-strong fleet only got underway in 1949, under the auspices of British Railways, with examples being turned-out from Swindon Works over a six-year period. No. 1628 was very much a Welsh ‘16XX’, being based initially at Whitland in Carmarthenshire, before moving to Llanelly shed in July 1953. Another transfer saw No. 1628 transfer to Oswestry in July 1959 for a short stay, before Croes Newydd shed, near Wrexham, became its final home from October of the same year. Only a works visit to Wolverhampton in August 1962 interrupted its Welsh residency.

This ‘16XX’ eventually became the last of its type in British Railways service, being withdrawn in September 1966. Our exclusive model portrays No. 1628 in the ubiquitous BR black livery, adorned with the later style of emblem and an authentic weathered finish. The smokebox door features a 6C shedcode, accurately placing the ‘16XX’ at Croes Newydd shed in the 1963-1966 period, after the depot had acquired a London Midland Region code, becoming a sub-shed of Chester.

Manufactured for Model Rail by Rapido Trains UK, this ‘OO’ gauge model boasts an impressive specification, including a wealth of separately fitted details (including fully appointed cab with glowing firebox effect), plus a Next18 DCC socket and a speaker pre-installed in the bunker. The five-pole motor and precision gears ensure the model runs as well as it looks.
