Model Rail has commissioned Accurascale to produce an exclusive ‘OO’ gauge model of British Rail’s Class 31 31116 RAIL Celebrity, in its unique Infrastructure livery.
The former D5534 was chosen to mark the first decade of our sister title RAIL magazine, initially receiving RAIL 1981-1991 nameplates in October 1991 while wearing BR’s ‘Dutch’ grey/yellow civil engineers’ livery.
However, it famously gained a one-off Union Pacific-inspired scheme of grey and yellow, with twin red bands, in 1993. To mark the occasion, 31116 was re-dedicated as RAIL Celebrity, in anticipation of the locomotive becoming a favourite with contemporary enthusiasts. Indeed, it was a common sight at depot open days around the country and, although its primary duties were hauling engineers’ trains, 31116 was also pressed into service on parcels, empty stock and passenger services. The Brush Type 2 worked in this striking livery until withdrawal and eventual scrapping.
Thanks to readers’ votes, Accurascale’s Class 31 recently scooped first prize amongst ‘OO’ diesel and electric locomotives in Model Rail’s Model of the Year awards for 2024, and our model of 31116 forms part of the follow-up production run focusing on later BR and post-nationalisation era prototypes.
