MR-506 Model Rail Class 11 Diesel Shunter number 15101 - BR WR Green with BRITISH RAILWAYS lettering

PROTOTYPE INFORMATION

Following the success of the English Electric 350hp diesel-electric shunters built for the LMS and War Department in the early 1940s, the Great Western Railway was also keen to trial these powerful, low-maintenance locomotives.

Built at Swindon Works and delivered soon after Nationalisation of the railways in 1948, 15101 was the first of six locomotives (15101-6) built for the Western Region, all of which carried typical ‘Western’ features such as cast brass numberplates and GWR-pattern lamp brackets.

Produced exclusively for Model Rail by Heljan, our model of 15101 replicates these unique GWR-style features and portrays the prototype in as-built condition, with GWR-style British Railways lettering. It also carries a large gold No. 1 on each end – each of the WR locomotives had the last digit of the running number applied in this way. Later known as a Class 11, 15101 continued in service until August 1967, working on station pilot and general shunting duties.

Our model features a punchy, flywheel-fitted motor and precision gears, plus a pre-installed speaker and NEXT18 DCC decoder socket. The fully detailed cab can be admired by switching the interior lighting on via the supplied magnetic wand.
